Revolutionary Guards Chief Announces End of Protests in Iran
The chief of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard, General Mohammad Ali Jafari, announced on Wednesday that the protests have now ended. Tens of thousands gathered to show strength for Islamic rulers after days of lethal unrest.
“Today we can announce the end of the sedition,” Jafari said, quoted on foreign media sites.
Mass protests over economic issues erupted in the city of Mashhad on December 28. The unrest spread like wildfire across the whole country, turning against the regime.
A total death-toll of 21 came from the protests. The General commented, saying that the guards only ever intervened “in a limited way” against fewer than 15,000 “trouble-makers.” He added, that a large amount had been arrested.
“A large number of the trouble-makers at the center of the sedition, who received training from counter-revolutionaries […] have been arrested and there will be firm action against them,” he said.
At the end of the protests, demonstrators were seen waving Iranian flags and pictures of supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, as well as placards which read “Death to seditionists”. Chants of “Leader, we are ready” were also heard across the nation.
