Warehouse in Former Kirov Factory Catches Fire

Around 20 fire-fighting brigades managed to put out extensive fire in former Kirov Factory in Didube district, which started from a warehouse of mattresses yesterday at around 5pm.

Up to 80 firefighters were trying for several hours to extinguish the blaze, which posed threat to the other warehouses, located in the same building.

Deputy Head of Tbilisi Emergency Situations Management Service, Mamuka Kirimeli told reporters that no one was killed or injured in the fire. He said more than 400 square meters of territory was destroyed, adding the rescuers managed to save only a very little amount of the production.

As reported by media, the warehouse of mattresses was insured. The total amount of loss will be calculated later.

The police have launched an investigation into the case in order to find out the real cause of the fire. It will also be studied if the safety norms were preserved at the site.

Some workers told media the fire started after the fire sparks fell on the mattresses from the neighboring iron factory, during processing the metal.

“We saw how the sparks ignited the fire on mattresses. We were trying to put it out but it started to spread very quickly and we called the fire-fighters,” one of the workers of the warehouse, Giorgi Sharikadze told reporters.
