Georgian Police Detain 855 for Domestic Violence in 3 Months

Georgia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs reports that since January 1, 2018, 855 individuals have been detained in the country on charges of domestic violence.

In particular, police detained 424 people for domestic violence in Tbilisi, in Imereti and Racha-Lechkhumi regions - 78 , in Kvemo Kartli - 76, in Kakheti - 68, Shida Kartli -66, 40  in Adjara region, 39  in Samtskhe-Javakheti region, in Samegrelo - 25, Guria region - 25 and 14 people have been detained in Mtskheta-Mtianeti region. 

As for the specific articles, out of the detained 855:

585 persons were arrested for domestic violence

206 - Violence against family members

39 - Threats against family member

5 – for inclining damage to the health of family members

3 - Accused of compulsion against a family member

3 - Family member stalking charges

3 - Charges for attempting murder of a family member

2 - Charges of murder of a family member

2 –Injuring family members

2 - for the illegal deprivation of freedom of the family member

1 - Crime against a family member against sexual liberty and inviolability

1 - Inhuman treatment against a family member

1 – Driving a family member to suicide

1 - Failure to comply with obligations under a restraining order issued to a family member

1 – Keeping family member in hostage

The MIA reports that in parallel to investigations into the abovementioned cases, 1402 restraining orders have been issued in order to protect victims.

The Ministry added that this year, more people have reported to police regarding domestic violence, compared to 2017.

“This confirms that the trust of our citizens in the police has increased,” the MIA stated.
