National Food Agency Detects Donkey & Horse Meat in Frozen Food

Georgia’s National Food Agency (NFA) checked 20 samples of frozen meat products in Tbilisi and found horse and donkey DNA in nine.

The producers were fined 1000 GEL and were ordered to withdraw the hazardous products from the market, supervised by the National Food Agency.

The list of products and business operators which used horse and donkey meat in their products are:

  • Entrepreneur David Tsotskolauri - Horse DNA was found in Basturma
  • LTD Mada - Horse DNA found in Khinkali;
  • LTD Kedari - Horse DNA found in Khinkali;
  • LTD Lashari - Horse DNA found in Khinkali;
  • LTD Lashari - Horse and donkey DNA discovered in Blinchiki (pencakes stuffed with meat);
  • LTD Lashari  - DNA of horsefound in meatballs;
  • LTD Merkado - horse meat discovered in the agrarian market;
  • LTD Gio - DNA of horse found in Kebab.

The NFA added that they revealed poor sanitary-hygienic norms and a large quantity of suspicious origin meat in the enterprise of Davit Tsostkolauri. The enterprise's activity was suspended and the agency will seize and destroy the meat.
