Opposition Summons Foreign Minister to Parliament over Relations with Syria
Georgian opposition parties have summoned Foreign Minister and Vice-Prime Minister Mikheil Janelidze to parliament in order to discuss the recent developments in the country - Syria’s recognition of Georgian breakaway regions Abkhazia and South Ossetia as independent states.
Parliamentary minority party European Georgia says concrete steps must be taken in regards to relations with Syria, adding its support for the Georgian government's decision to immediately cut diplomatic ties with Syria.
“We need concrete answers from the government. We wonder what they are going to do next. This is why we are waiting for Janeidze to the Parliament,” Sergi Kapanadze, member of European Georgia, said.
Apart from Syria, only four countries recognize Georgia’s occupied regions as independent states. These four countries are: Russia, Nicaragua, Venezuela and Nauru.
“We do not think that anything tragic happened after the Assad regime recognized breakaway Abkhazia and Tskhinvali,” he added.
According to United National Movement MP Salome Samadashvili, the recognition further demonstrates that Russia fulfills its political objectives without any obstacles.
“During recent years, the Georgian government failed to make Russia pay for its illegal actions,” Samadashvili stated.
Earlier on May 29, the Foreign Minister of Georgia stated that Tbilisi has abolished diplomatic relations with Syria.
“Recognition of the independence of historic regions of Georgia, Abkhazia and Tskhinvali (South Ossetia) by the Russian-manipulated Assad regime in Syria is another blatant violation of International Law by Assad and should be condemned by the international community,” Janelidze stressed.
