Foreign Diplomats in Georgia Reaffirm Support to Tbilisi
After the decision of Syria to recognize Georgia's occupied territories of Abkhazia and South Ossetia as independent states, diplomatic representations in Tbilisi have reaffirmed their support for Georgia and Georgia's territorial integrity.
Janos Herman, Head of the EU Delegation to Georgia, said that the European Union will continue to seek ways to peacefully resolve territorial conflicts in Georgia.
“This decision attracted great attention in Brussels. We strongly support Georgia's sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders. Consequently, the decision of Syria is against international law and the non-recognition policy that has been implemented by the European Union,” he stated.
French Ambassador to Georgia, Pascal Meunier, stated that France also supports Georgia's sovereignty and territorial integrity.
“Syria's recognition of Georgia's occupied territories means nothing to us. This step has nothing to do with international norms," he stressed.
Moreover, Heike Peitsch, German Ambassador to Georgia, has condemned the step taken by Syria.
“We condemn the decision of [Syrian President Bashar] Assad’s regime. Germany and all international partners support Georgia's sovereignty and territorial integrity," she added.
