Saakashvili on Relations with Syria: This Is Diplomatic Failure of Gov’t
Former President of Georgia, Mikheil Saakashvili has commented on Syria’s recognition of Georgia’s breakaway regions, Abkhazia and South Ossetia, as independent states, blaming the current Georgian government.
In a post on Facebook, Saakashvili says that this is another surprise from the billionaire Bidzina Ivanishvili's government. Ivanishvili is the head of the Georgian Dream party, which controls the Government of Georgia and dominates both Parliament and local governments. Georgian Dream ousted Saakashvili's United National Movement government in the 2012 Parliamentary elections.
Saakashvili says that appointment of Mikheil Janelidze to the post of Foreign Minister was a “mistake,” adding he is “inexperienced.”
“During my presidency this post was held by a very experienced diplomat Grigol Vashadze…Several years ago Assad was very dependent on Putin and we managed to make him reconsider recognition of Georgia’s breakaway regions. The same was with Belarus and I personally improved the relationship with President Lukashenko,” he stated.
Saakashvili says more negative surprises await Georgia if the Georgian Dream government stays in power.
Syria recognized Georgia's occupied terriroties as independent states on May 29.
