US Department of State Voices Support for Georgia
United States Department of State Spokesperson Heather Nauert said in a press briefing on May 29 that Syria’s recognition of Georgia's breakaway regions Abkhazia and South Ossetia was not a complete surprise “because Bashar al-Assad is propped-up by the Russian regime.”
“The Russian-occupied regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia are integral parts of Georgia, and we continue to support Georgia's soverignty, independence, and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders,” she added.
Syria announced the establishment of diplomatic ties with occupied Abkhazia and South Ossetia on May 29. After this, Tbilisi officially decided to cut diplomatic ties with Damascus.
