No Taxi Permits for 2-Door or Right-Hand Drive Vehicles
Two-door and right-hand drive cars will not be given permits to operate as taxis, according to a statement by Mamuka Mumladze, head of the City Transport Service Department, on the radio show Palitra.
The limitations will be enforced from October 1, 2019 when the second phase of the new taxi regulation campaign comes into force. Only taxis painted the official color and with proper permitting will be able to officially operate. The new taxi color will be decided this fall.
In January 2018, Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze made the announcement many Tbilisians had long been waiting for: the beginning of the regulation of the taxi market. By October 1 of this year, all taxi drivers will be required to register with City Hall by paying a fee of 50 GEL (25 GEL for a hybrid vehicle, free for electric cars), and presenting their driver’s license and personal identification documents. By January 2019, additional regulations will be in place – most importantly, mandatory annual inspections for all vehicles in the city.
