Sanctions to Increase for Drunk Driving

Administrative measures will be tightened for drink-driving in Georgia, says Director of the Joint Operations Center of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Giorgi Arsoshvili.

The package of relevant legislative amendments will be presented to Parliament at the autumn session. The amendments envisage increased penalties.

Under the current law, drunk-driving results in suspension of the driving license for six months. Three months later, the drivers can retake the driving test and get a new license, or pay a fine of 1000 GEL.

Under the new legislative amendments, in case of drunk-driving, the license will be suspended for a longer period.

"We are studying the best international practice, on the basis of which we are preparing a package of relevant legislative amendments, which will be submitted to Parliament during the autumn session. The imposition of stricter sanctions for drunk-driving will reduce road accidents," said Giorgi Arsoshvili.
