De Facto Tskhinvali Gov't Closes the Border at Village Perevi
The de facto government of the Tskhinvali region, a territory of Georgia occupied by Russia, has moved to close the so-called border with the rest of Georgia at the village of Perevi, Municipality of Sachkhere.
The "security committee of Tskhinvali" announced that the checkpoint of Perevi would be closed from 8:00 PM September 18 to 6:00 AM September 22. The committee named “celebratory arrangements for Republic Day” as the reason for the temporary border restriction.
This news is not the first time the de facto government of Tskhinvali has closed the “borders” with Georgia proper. On September 4, they closed the checkpoints of Akhalgori and Javi, blaming the Georgian government for making the situation overly intense at the so-called border.
The de facto security committee promised the re-opening of these checkpoints as soon as the situation is normalized on the territories.
Unsurprisingly, the set of circumstances at the artificially formed “border” has been tense ever since 2008. Every once in a while, the situation intensifies. This year, it has been getting more intense since the end of August. When Georgia opened a police post in the village of Chorchana on August 29, the de facto Government of Georgia’s Russian-occupied Tskhinvali region constructed a "police post" at a strategically important high point near the village of Tsnelisi, Kareli municipality.
