Fire in Moscow Shopping Mall Kills 1, Injures 6

A fire which is said to have started on the upper level of Moscow shopping mall 'Perseus' in a toy storeroom went on to kill one and injure six.

Ilya Denisov, Head of the Moscow Emergency Situations Ministry, said the blaze killed a mall worker and injured six firefighters. "The employee went in the opposite direction from the emergency exit and suffocated," Denisov said.

The fire spread to the roof before being put out by firefighting services on Wednesday afternoon. Some 300 people were evacuated.

The latest mall blaze, this time in an eastern Moscow district, comes just a week after a fire in a Siberian shopping mall which claimed 64 lives.

The authorities have yet to find a cause and have promised to step up health and safety standards nationwide.

Following the Kemerovo blaze, the local Governor, Aman Tuleyev, handed in his resignation.
