Nona Gaprindashvili Becomes Champion in World Senior Chess Championship
Georgia’s Nona Gaprindashvili became World Champion in the Women’s +65 category in the 25th World Senior Chess Championship 2015. She was the women's World Champion from 1962 until 1978, this is her 4th time as Senior World Champion.
The tournament was split into 4 age groups and took place in Acqui Terme, Italy.
Gaprindashvili gained 7.0 points in 9 rounds and won by 0.5 points against Georgia’s Tamar Khmiadashvili. As a result, the European and World Cup winner, Khmiadashvili, won silver in the senior’s category.
Predrag Nikolic became the +50 Men's champion, who won in 11 rounds with 9.5 points. George Baghaturov took 6th place with 7.5 points, while Varlam Vephkhviashvili placed 38th with 6.0 points.
Among the women in the same category, Nino Melashvili took 5th place with 5.5 points, Tsiala Kasoshvili took 9th with 5.0 points, and Margarita Tandashvili placed 12th with 4.5 points.
Russian Galina Strutinskaia became the new champion with 6.0 points. Georgia didn’t have a player in the +65 men’s category, where French Vladimir Okhotnik took the gold medal with 9.5 points.
