Georgian Fencer Triumphs at Fencing World Cup

Georgian fencer Sandro Bazadze claimed his first victory of 2016 at the Fencing World Cup competition, taking first place at the International Fencing Federation’s Satellite event in Turkish capital, Istanbul.

Bazadze won against Canadian Joseph Polossifakis in the tournament’s final for the sabre category with a score of 15:13.

Polossifakis had beaten Bazadze’s brother Beka Bazadze in the semifinal match while Sandro eliminated his teammate Mikheil Mardaleishvili in his play-off fixture.

In total, three Georgian athletes contributed to the national team with medals at the competition that ran on January 9 and 10.

Bazadze was the first Georgian to win a gold medal at the European Youth Fencing Championships which took place in 2013. He also took a gold medal at the Under 23 European Championship in Tbilisi in 2014.
