Biathlon Track to Open in Bakuriani

Turning Bakuriani, one of the most popular ski resorts in Georgia, into an Olympic standard location has been discussed numerous times since the mid-80s. But such plans were constantly quashed by both the political and social turmoils the country went through, remaining an unrealistic goal to achieve.

Yet dreams never die and Georgia’s Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili recently announced a plan to build a biathlon track of Olympic standard in Bakuriani with an investment of 796,500 GEL, launched in partnership with French company ABEST.

The PM claims this is to be a very serious and considerable step forward in developing Bakuriani and its neighboring town Borjomi into a complex with Olympic infrastructure, thus making the possibility of hosting the Winter Olympic Games in Georgia more realistic.

Transforming Georgian resorts into attractive, year-round tourist destinations is said to be among the top priorities for the country’s government.

The new biathlon track is to be followed by construction of a hockey hall, also in Bakuriani.
