New Chapter in Dinamo Arena's Illustrious History
Renovations amounting to 20 million GEL have been carried out at Tbilisi's Dinamo Arena, rendering the stadium in suitable condition for the forthcoming UEFA Super Cup match between Barcelona and Sevilla on August 11.
Georgia’s Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili visited the revamped Dinamo Arena on July 18 and emphasized that Georgia was well prepared to hold such a prestigious event.
"Our country will have one of the most modern stadiums. This is renovated according to international standards, we improved everything and we are ready to properly host the Barcelona-Sevilla match on August 11,” Garibashvili said.
A special governmental commission was set up to tackle organizational issues related to the upcoming Super Cup match with Vice Prime Minister and former AC Milan player Kakha Kaladze appointed as head of the commission.
The build up to the occasion has been somewhat marred by problems with selling tickets. After several attempts to sell the tickets online failed due the inability of local distributor biletebi.ge to handle the volume of demand, the much-coveted tickets were sold on July 12 and 13 at Mikheil Meskhi Stadium.
This may be the first high-profile match for the new-look Dinamo Arena but the stadium, also referred to as the Boris Paichadze Stadium, has hosted some of the world's best players through the decades.
Indeed, less than four months ago, world champions Germany graced the Dinamo Arena surface, winning 2-0 against Georgia in a Euro 2016 qualifier.
