Russia ahead at EYOF
The Russian Federation national team is in first place following the first day of competition at the European Youth Olympic Festival (EYOF) 2015 in Tbilisi.
The 13th European Youth Olympic Festival has already revealed winners in several disciplines. The Russian national team took two gold medals in swimming in the 4x100 relay race with Russian Alexei Sancov taking the gold medal in the 200m free race. The national team of Hungary became a record-holder in the swimming category with three medals.
The winner in the athletic steeple 2000m race among boys was Stefan Schmid from Austria with Metevs Cimermancic from Slovenia winning the silver medal and French Timothee Mischler in third place. Jasmijn Bakker from the Netherlands was the winner among girls.
The Georgian national team had a successful start in tennis. Four Georgian sportsmen: Ana Makatsaria, Nikoloz Davlianidze, Ana Shanidze and David Chelidze set to continue through to the next round.
Both Georgian volleyball teams also won yesterday. Georgian girls won 3:0 against Russia while the boys' team beat the Polish team.
In basketball, both Georgian teams played against Turkey, the boys' game being more successful than the girls'. The boys won with a score of 89:50, but the girls lost 28:61.
There were also disappointments for Georgia in handball as well – the boys’ Georgian national teams lost 28:22 against Switzerland and girls were defeated by the Czech Republic 40:17.
As a result, after the first day of the EYOF 2015, the Russian Federation, Hungary and Austria are leading.
